Help With SHOWGIF & OLVIEW .. 3
---------------------------------
INTRODUCTION
-----------------------------------------------------------------
OLVIEW is a door program that provides a BBS caller with the
ability to view up to four different GIF files at once while on
line with any BBS, and in just 3 to 4 minutes, reguardless of the
size of the GIF files being viewed. This is made possible with Jay
Wherley's wonderful GIF viewer/utility, GIFDESK.
YOUR SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
-----------------------------------------------------------------
To use the OLVIEW door, you must make sure that two things are in
place on your system:
1) The door requires that you have Bill Parquet and
Dave Sharpless's SHOWGIF loaded before you run your
communications program. Be advised that SHOWGIF is a
first class Shareware program. If you use the OLVIEW
door (which means that your using SHOWGIF), then you
MUST register SHOWGIF. See the SHOWGIF doc's for
information on registering your copy.
2) The OLVIEW door also requires your system to have
ANSI graphics for proper operation. Make sure that the
following line is included in your CONFIG.SYS file:
DEVICE=ANSI.SYS. (This assumes that ANSI.SYS is in the
root directory of your system.) You must re-boot your
system after making this change in your CONFIG.SYS
file before it will take effect.
OLVIEW & SHOWGIF both require that your system have at least EGA
graphics. A VGA card will provide the best results as the
preview GIF file sent back to you is 640X480X256. This door is
intended to be used by callers that have serious graphics
hardware in their systems, (i.e. 512k or 1024k VGA cards). If you
have a 128k VGA card it will still work, but your resoulution may
not be as good as possible.
HOW IT WORKS
-----------------------------------------------------------------
OLVIEW is a door program that will ask you for up to four GIF
file names, and verify that they exist on the system that you are
calling. It will then build a preview GIF file that contains a

smaller image of the GIF(s) you named and download it to you with
the file transfer protocol of your choice. SHOWGIF will display
this preview file while it is downloading.
Two choices are available when building your preview file: 1) Small
and 2) Medium. The small file will build and transfer quicker, but
the medium file will provide a larger picture of the GIFs you
have chosen to preview. If the Small display format is chosen,
the entire process only takes 3 to 4 minutes, even with the largest
GIF files. If you prefer the Medium display format, the transfer
will take a little longer, but the image is much larger and has
more detail. The transfer of a Medium preview file can take 7
to 8 minutes (at 2400 baud) if all four GIFs are displayed.
A QUICK START
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Your first step in getting online with OLVIEW is the
installation of SHOWGIF. If you are a veteran user of SHOWGIF
then quit reading this, and start using the OLVIEW door. If
not, then this bud's for you...
SHOWGIF is a TSR that, when loaded, will detect the presence of a
GIF file being downloaded and will display the GIF file while the
download is in progress!
Download a copy of SHWGIF52.EXE from the BBS that you got this DOC
file from. SHWGIF52.EXE is a self-extracting zip file, so I suggest
that you create a temp directory and move SHWGIF52.EXE into it
before you run it. SHWGIF52.EXE will spawn 31 files when run.
Check the .DOC file for instructions on how to configure SHOWGIF
for your VGA card. You will use the CSHOWGIF program to configure
your copy of SHOWGIF for your VGA card type.
A few hints on configuring your copy of SHOWGIF:
Set 'pause' on during the configuration process if you
intend to use SHOWGIF with OLVIEW only. I find SHOWGIF
handy anytime I am downloading GIFs from a BBS, so you
may want to use the default setting for 'MESSAGE DELAY'
of 36, which provides 2 seconds of view time after
recieving a GIF file.
I also suggest that you set the 'mode of detection' to
FILE STREAMS.
USING THE OLVIEW DOOR
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The door will display a warning message and request which file
transfer protocol you wish to use when it begins. Enter your
protocol selection and press ENTER to continue. Next, enter the
desired display format: 1) small, 2) medium. You may then enter
up to 4 gif file names that you would like to preview (you must

include the .GIF extension).
The system will then build your preview GIF and send it to you
using the protocol you specified. When you begin your download,
SHOWGIF will display the preview GIF file while the download is
in progress. You may repeat the process as many times as your
remaining time online with the BBS allows.
